Abstract

The article is dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the birth of Bishop Sofron Mudryi, Eastern Canon Law professor at the Pontifical Oriental Institute in Rome, subsequently at Ivano-Frankivsk Theological Academy and Vasyl Stefanyk Precarpathian National University. It comprises two blocks. The first one offers an analysis of the research works written over a quarter of a century, starting from the late 1990s, by representatives of various branches of Ukrainian human sciences, which study the ecclesiastical, educational and scientific spheres of his activities. The review of research explorations allowed not only to show the magnitude of this outstanding personality as an ecclesiastical and cultural figure, but also to reveal a significant gap, that is the lack of studies of the philosophical views of His Eminence Bishop. The second block gives the analysis of the philosophical dimension of the historical and jurisprudential heritage of Professor Mudryi in the scientific discourse for the first time, as well as that of his historiosophy, and philosophical and theological vision of the thinker of the millennial history of Ukrainian Christianity focusing on such concepts as proselytism and the price of patience. The author argues that philosophy as an ideology shaped every ecclesiastical or public speech of Sofron Mudryi, his scientific and theological thought and determined the ideological and conceptual level of his writings and statements. Being a historian of the Church and Doctor of Canon Law, Professor Mudryi developed a philosophical and religious vision of historical and legal issues of proselytism in the light of the holistic understanding of the identity of the national and religious in their inseparability, interrelation and mutual influence on the heroic trails marked by glory, and on the tragic paths of the history of the formation of the Ukrainian Church and Ukrainian nation as a single historical and cultural process.
