Abstract
The article analyzes the research activity of the department of scientific atheism of the Institute of Philosophy of the Academy of sciences of Ukrainian SSR. The author, using achieve materials, observes department’s main research projects and shows how they were formed. The applied research of the department is also examined in the article. They were connected to the study of religious situation on enterprises and the development of practical recommendations for effective atheistic upbringing. It was found out, that among the department’s research projects there were opportunistic and those which were conducted by the order of the Communist party organizations. The department staff were not limited to writing methodological recommendations and scientific notes. Within the same program, they conducted methodological seminars for teachers for two years, provided a methodological lecture for teachers of schools and atheistic circles "Man and the World" for students, spoke at pedagogical meetings, and organized and held a city scientific-practical conference. In addition to departmental planning topics, as well as applied research on atheistic education, the department was involved in additional topics. In particular, the sector of theoretical problems of scientific atheism participated in the development of the topic "Atheistic Education: Content, Forms, Methods", which was part of the Republican comprehensive program of research on communist education. Applied in this case, we are referring not only to the fact that the employees of the department actually conducted field research, used the methods of questioning, surveys and interviews to clarify the religious situation in enterprises, but rather that these studies were conducted to develop practical recommendations for improving and improving the effectiveness of atheistic education. The author concludes that the propagandistic work of the department if not dominated the research, then affected it significantly.
