Abstract
This article analyzes a multilingualism as a challenge for national higher education. There are found the conditions for the implementation of multilingual regime in Ukraine, which will help to overcome the opposition of patriotism and pragmatism. Multilingualism in Ukraine should not deny the status of Ukrainian as the only state language, but should promote the development of language culture and language competence of citizens of Ukraine. A key role in the transition to this regime of multilingualism should be played by a higher education system that can create the necessary conditions for mastering in foreign languages at a high level, which is a prerequisite for the successful modernization of Ukrainian society. The dichotomy of sovereignty-modernization and adaptation-modernization directly extrapolated to the language situation in the education system, causing the specific language environment in schools and outlining possible ways of their further development. In the first case the priority of the state language and its monopoly as, if not the common, than certainly the dominant language of higher education shall be conclusive. In the second – under the certain circumstances the priority could be given to English as being dominant in the global educational environment, the best language resources to obtain or continue their education outside of Ukraine in the world's top universities, including those that belong to the circle of five hundred best universities of the world. Each of these ways is unfortunate, moreover – unrealistic. So the appeal to multilingualism in higher education and society is inevitable as a modern response to global challenges.
