Ukrainian Churches іn the Value Spectrum of Social Practices: Criteria of Social Responsibility and Mission

Abstract

The article examines the axiological significance of the activities of traditional Ukrainian churches in the context of contemporary geopolitical and social challenges, particularly amid Russian aggression, and their role in strengthening social unity and spiritual resilience. The study addresses how Ukrainian churches respond to the challenges of war, including maintaining the moral authority of religious institutions, countering secularization theories, and resisting informational manipulation related to controversial statements by religious leaders. Special attention is given to the diplomatic stance of the Vatican, which evokes mixed perceptions in Ukrainian society. The research aims to analyze the activities of Ukrainian churches as active agents of social service, their contribution to supporting internally displaced persons, combating religious persecution, and advocating on the international stage. It also explores the role of The Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organizations (UCCRO) in drawing attention to humanitarian challenges in Ukraine. The article highlights the key role of Christian churches (OCU, RCC in Ukraine, UGCC) in the socio-political life of the country and in promoting principles of just peace. Public reactions to Pope Francis’s statements, which affect the Vatican’s image, are analyzed, as well as the challenges faced by Ukrainian religious leaders in balancing the explanation of the Apostolic See’s position with support for national resistance. Emphasis is placed on the importance of countering informational manipulation and preserving religious identity in wartime conditions
