Abstract

The article analyses the applicability of the concept of ‘exceptionalism' in the study of the history of Ukrainian political thought. The author defines the general concept of ‘’exceptionalism‘’, provides a brief overview of the history of this concept in the context of the American Studies, i.e. the history of American political thought and culture, civil religion, and in a more globalised context as well. In particular, it examines the use of this term within the framework of Russian studies and the definition of Russian policy as ‘hybrid exceptionalism’, as well as the role of Stalin in shaping the American exceptionalist discourse. Based on a review of contemporary Western scholarly literature on this topic, the author outlines the general concept of ‘exceptionalism’ and identifies its indicators. The author makes a preliminary attempt to apply these indicators to Ukrainian intellectual history in the 19th century and identifies two trends in which the exceptionalist markers can be traced: Polish Ukrainophilia and the legacy of the Cyril and Methodius Brotherhood. The author notes that the history of Ukrainian exceptionalism in the 20th - 21st centuries is pretty ample, but the study of the first stages of the formation of Ukrainian modernity is very important from both scientific and political perspectives.
