Abstract

The story of the revival of the Pochayna River is the best example of "deep geography", which is told by historian Timothy Snyder. The Pochayna River has changed a lot over the centuries of human activity, and during Soviet times it suffered from political repressions and was purposefully forgotten. Today, the historical channel is divided into parts: the upper one is a water system of six lakes and a small river with a modern mouth under the Northern Bridge, a river harbor has been created on the middle one, and the lower one near the modern Post Square has joined the Dnieper river. Recently, the historical significance of the river was returned: the Pochayna hydronym was again attached to the reservoir, and the most probable place of baptism of the people of Kyiv at the historical mouth of the Pochayna River received it's status as a Monument of national significance of history and archeology. This article is devoted to the changes that have taken place in the Pochaina over the centuries, the reasons for the river's disappearance from the maps of Kyiv, as well as the modern history of its revival.
