Abstract
The article features the relationship of existentialism, phenomenology, hermeneutics and Christian thought in the Merold Westphal’s views. The problem of the perception of American phenomenologist God liberated from the chains onto-theological understanding and borrowed from them reinterpretation works by Martin Heidegger. We study the specifics of Westphal’s interpretation and application of the Aurelius Augustine’s, Immanuel Kant’s, Søren Kierkegaard’s ideas about the “post-modern faith argument” and the interpretation of “postmodern self”. The evolution of the views of Merold Westphal with existential phenomenology of religion to the “radical hermeneutics”, built on the “hermeneutics of limbs” and “hermeneutics of suspicion”, which make it possible to “positive postmodernism” and modernization of Christianity, finding the true faith.
