Abstract

The article is devoted to rethinking methodological approaches in the religious studies understanding of religion as a value. A critical attitude to the previous experience of interpreting a religious phenomenon allows us to perceive religion as an equal value with other types of human self-awareness. This is prompted by the very status of religion in the modern world, which is changing under the influence of globalization and secularization. One of the tendencies of these processes is the departure from the restrictions of "sectarianism" and "nationalism" in religion to the expansion of the boundaries of understanding spirituality as a universal religious value. The article determines the value of religion in its ontological status, in its existentiality, vitality, in epistemological load, in praxeological questionability, in eschatological perspective and in the hierarchical priority of spiritual origin, goodness and humanity. Based on this understanding of religion, the authors explain it in the system of religious values that are implemented in the everyday lives of followers of a particular religion and society as a whole. The article presents materials of local sociological surveys conducted by the students of Borys Hrinchenko Kyiv University, who joined the study of the role of religious values in the life of Ukrainian society during the 2020-2021 academic (analytical specialization) practice. The results of the local community survey are analyzed through a comparative analysis with the data of the latest all-Ukrainian opinion polls. Such a comparison help to create a fuller picture of the studied reality and the specifics of the perception of religious values and the values of religion. As a result of the analysis, it was possible to single out the peculiarities of the youth perception of religion as a value. The statement about the longevity of young people to the universalization of religious values as a desire to expand the boundaries of their understanding of spirituality was proved. The modern processes of globalization affect the perception of religious values and religion as a conceptual core in youth communities, demonstrating the high stochasticity of this perception, the tendency to transformations caused by religious postmodern, religious pluralism, and thus is heterogeneous, unstable, eclectic, and syncretic. The actualization of the presence of religion in the life of the youth segment of society occurs through the following characteristics of religion: practicality, universality, regularity, strateginess, hierarchiness of values, priority of the spiritual, the ability to live together and near, communicative and meaningful skills.
